Police arrested Friday a four-person, multinational gang of thieves after finding 409 counterfeit gold coins in their possession in Tripoli’s gold market. A police patrol headed by Brigadier Bassam Ayyoubi detained a Saudi man, two Syrian men, and a Lebanese woman, after finding the coins in their possession. The police said the coins were expertly produced, making it difficult to differentiate them from real gold coins. Ayyoubi said the authorities had been tracking the group, which traveled from Turkey through Syria, and detained them while they were trying to sell the coins. Stolen jewellery and coins which could be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds have been recovered during a police operation in Dumbarton. The haul includes Spanish gold coins, South African Kruggerands and a diamond-encrusted Rolex watch which is thought to be worth a five-figure sum. Police believe the items may come from several different robberies and do not belong to the one person. They have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.

Det Sgt Martin Penny, of Strathclyde Police, said: "The jewellery is all different so I believe that they do not belong to one person but to many different people. "The items range from antique gold to brightly coloured gold, and include a Rolex watch, a Baume and Mercier watch, gold and diamond rings, earrings, charm bracelets and other gold and diamond bracelets. "Efforts to trace the owners of the items have taken our enquiries to places as far away as Hong Kong". Read More.
