Diamond Jubilee Gold-Plated Photographic Coin

Diamond Jubilee coin
The Diamond Jubilee Gold-Plated Photographic Coin is limited to 60,000 pieces. This crown-sized 24 carat gold-plated coin has been approved by Buckingham Palace. Unusually, modern minting techniques have allowed Terry O’Neill’s famous photograph of the Queen to be shown on the coin in full colour and the edge to be milled with a unique diamond shape especially for the jubilee. What makes this coin remarkable is the almost certain expectation that all 60,000 pieces are expected to sell out. Collectors snapped up two earlier similar coins in just weeks. This Diamond Jubilee coin is currently exclusively available for an introductory price of just £9.99 from The Westminster Collection. The United Kingdom £5 Gold-Plated Silver Crown is only the second ever United Kingdom Crown to be gold-plated. This Diamond Jubilee £5 coin features an unprecedented “double-headed” design, showing the Queen in accession year on one side with a contemporary engraving of Her Majesty in her Garter robes on the other.Read More.

Baby Boomers collecting gold coins

gold coin
These days, there seems to be a rush of Baby Boomers collecting gold and silver coins, stamps, sports cards and other memorabilia. The market is so lucrative that criminals have moved in, churning out fake collector coins and baseball cards that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Profitably trading genuine collectibles is about as tricky as profitably panning for gold, but the advent of the counterfeits has made it even more difficult. Collectors Universe Inc. (CLCT/NASDAQ) provides the equivalent of picks and shovels to collectors. The company, based in Santa Ana, Calif., assesses the authenticity and condition of coins, sports cards and autographs. Customers register (US$50 to US$399 for coin collectors, US$109 to US$189 for sports card enthusiasts) then ship their items to the company’s experts, who examine the piece, determine whether or not it is authentic, assign a grade to its condition, and either encapsulate it in a tamper-proof plastic holder or, in the case of items that don’t fit in a plastic holder, issue a letter of authenticity. Fake items are returned without a grade. Read More.

$10 proof gold Indian Head will be displayed

Indian gold coin

A $10 gold piece insured for $3 million and perhaps once belonging to President Theodore Roosevelt will be displayed May 31-June 2 at the Long Beach Coin, Stamp and Collectibles Expo.

The coin is a proof 1907 Indian Head $10 with a rolled edge.

“There are only about 50 known rolled edge 1907 eagles, and this is one of only two known with satin proof surfaces and graded NGC Satin Proof-67. It will be exhibited by Monaco Rare Coins of Newport Beach, Calif.,” said Ronald J. Gillio, the Expo’s general chairman.

“This important and monumental rarity was not discovered to be a proof finish until several years ago. It was previously misattributed as Mint State,” said Adam Crum, vice president of Monaco Rare Coins.

“Some researchers believe this coin may have been owned by President Theodore Roosevelt, who asked acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to design the eagle and double eagle coins that were introduced in 1907. One prominent numismatist told me, ‘After all the research we did, your coin has to be Teddy’s.’ Obviously, more research is required,” Crum said.Read More.
